Dr Tiryaki’s latest academic article titled “Klimatický utečenec, klimatický migrant, či vnútorný vysídlenec?” has been published in a Slovak legal journal Paneurópske právnické listy. The aim of this paper is to explore the gap in the international legal protection for climate migrants, distinguishing between internally displaced persons and cross-border migrants. The paper emphasizes the necessity of providing legal protection for both categories and considers the potential and effectiveness of existing human rights documents as a basis for short-term and long-term solutions, which are currently lacking.

Taking into consideration the actualities of the entire island and the entire Eastern Mediterranean, as well as the constantly changing international environment, the author sees the way paved by the Annan Plan, which was rejected by an overwhelming majority of the Greek Cypriots in the April 2004 referendum, as one of utmost achievable equilibrium.

Dr. Sylvia Tiryaki wrote an article for Turkish Review’s
October-December 2011 edition with the title of “Turkey’s broken path to
EU membership.” The article argues the following: “As the oil and gas exploration commences off the East Mediterranean island of Cyprus, Turkey’s foundering EU negotiators are again likely to come under the spotlight, despite a lack of interest in the issue.” The article is an examination of the issues faced by Turkey on the road to EU membership, the waning importance of the European bloc in the country’s future and the possible impact of potential hydrocarbon reserves.
